MBA: Is it worth it all the hype?

This season again thousands of students would be toiling to pursue their dream of getting into a dream B-school. 7 months back I was one among that crowd until I got into the place where I am today, thanks to the online cat. But does it deserve all the hype surrounding it. How different is a MBA grad from a normal graduate? Why is he paid so much by the corporate machinery? (Is he actually paid so much?)

From my experience I don’t find any subject in my curriculum to be helpful in my career. Most of them are common sense and if there are any theories that they propogate they are no longer applicable in the real world. Ever since I entered this institution my sole focus has been internships. This year is about to end in this hunt. And probably in the next year I might be running behind a 10 lakh job. So what’s the purpose? What’s the gain? Or to put it across in MBA jargon: What’s the additional utility that is strengthening my bottom line?

The academics facet of the course is not what it is all about. Neither does it offer any value addition. You don’t learn in the class (atleast I don’t). It’s beyond the class rooms where the actual learning happens. The random talks that eat our sleeps and the people games which goes around in different forms with different people, all these teach better than what a 160 hour schedule can do over a term. Yes MBA is about the people and not about the subject. These might not be universally true. But that is how it has been to me till date. Will I cherish this experience throughout my life is something which is yet to be seen. As of now the raw truth about an MBA has been revealed. It’s not the degree that makes it glittering. It is the people pursuing it who make it glitter.
